Wave one: building them

The most immediate jobs are in construction. Gamuda, Sunway Construction and IJM are absorbing civil and structural engineers, mechanical-electrical-plumbing (MEP) specialists, quantity surveyors, safety officers and project managers to deliver hyperscale shells on tight timelines. Data-centre construction is unusually MEP-heavy — the power and cooling are the building — so electrical and mechanical trades are especially sought after.

Wave two: running them

When a data centre opens, a permanent operations team takes over. These are the critical-facilities roles: technicians and engineers who keep power, cooling and uptime flawless around the clock. Think electrical distribution and UPS systems, HVAC and liquid cooling, building management systems, plus network and physical-security staff. Uptime is the product, so these jobs carry real responsibility and shift premiums.

Crucially, many of these roles do not require a full engineering degree. Diplomas, vocational qualifications and vendor certifications open the door, and demand outstrips the supply of experienced people — which pushes pay up for anyone who builds a track record.

Wave three: using what they produce

Here is the wave most career coverage ignores. A data centre exists to sell compute, and the highest-value jobs in the whole chain are the ones that consume that compute: cloud engineers, data engineers, machine-learning and AI engineers, and MLOps specialists. These roles are not tied to Johor — they exist in every company that builds on the cloud, which is increasingly all of them.

Pay spans a wide band. Entry facilities technicians start modestly but climb fast with certifications and shift work. Experienced critical-facilities and electrical engineers earn strong salaries precisely because qualified candidates are scarce. The skills that travel
