On 16 September 2026 Anthropic merged Cowork into the main Claude app and, on the same day, launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta. If your Claude now looks different — one box instead of separate Chat and Cowork modes, an Output button, an Artifacts tab — that is why.
The change matters more than it looks. Until now Claude was something you asked for a draft, then pasted into Word or PowerPoint to finish. With Docs and Slides, the draft is the document: your team edits it, comments on it and shares it without leaving Claude. Here is how each piece works and how we suggest Malaysian teams start.
What changed on 16 September
- Chat and Cowork became one Claude. You describe the outcome you want and Claude picks the tool, whether that is a quick answer, a document or a multi-step task. Cowork tasks now sit under Recents.
- Claude Docs (beta): shared, editable documents with comments.
- Claude Slides (beta): decks you can edit, present from Claude or download.
- Claude Design now works inside conversations, for visual layouts and prototypes.
Rollout is gradual. Pro and Max users get it first over a few weeks; Team and Free follow; Enterprise customers get at least 30 days’ notice. Once your account moves over there is no switching back to the old separate modes.
Which tool for which job
| If you want… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want an answer, a summary or a quick draft | Just ask in the chat | Fastest; nothing to manage afterwards |
| You want a document people will edit and comment on | Claude Docs | Shared link, live co-editing, @Claude in comments, export to Word or Google Docs |
| You want a deck to present or send | Claude Slides | Present from Claude or download PowerPoint or PDF |
| You want Claude to do a multi-step job on your files | Cowork (a task) | Works through folders, connectors and the browser, can run on a schedule |

Claude Docs: how to start one
There are four ways in, and they all end in the same place:
- Ask in any chat: “Draft a status report from these notes.”
- Type
/docsin the message box. - Click Output in the message box and choose a template.
- Open the Artifacts tab, pick a Docs template and describe what you need.
Then edit it like any document. Type straight into it (it saves as you go), or ask Claude in the chat to restructure a section. The feature our class participants like most: select a paragraph, add a comment and mention @Claude. Claude replies in the thread, makes the edit and explains what it changed. It feels a lot like working with a sharp junior colleague.
Colleagues can edit at the same time, and each change shows who made it. Sharing has two levels, Viewer or Editor, and on Team and Enterprise you can share with people, groups or the whole company but not outside it. Anyone opening the doc needs a Claude account. When it is ready, export to Word (.docx), PDF, Markdown or Google Docs.
Beta limits to know before you rely on it: there is no version history yet, no comment-only access, and charts pulling data from connected apps need a manual refresh. Docs is also not available to organisations on CMEK, zero-data-retention or HIPAA-ready set-ups.
Claude Slides: from notes to a deck
Give Claude your meeting notes, a report or the conversation you have just had, and ask for a deck. You can edit slides directly, present from inside Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. Each deck lives at one shareable link that also opens on a phone, which is handy for the “can you send me the slides?” moment after a meeting.
A tip from our Claude classes: give it the audience and the decision you want, not just the topic. “Eight slides for the CFO recommending we move invoice matching to an AI workflow, with the cost case on slide 3” gets a far better first draft than “make a deck about AI in finance”.
Cowork: when you want Claude to do the work
Cowork is the part that runs tasks rather than writing text. Describe the outcome, the format and the inputs, and Claude works through it: reading a local folder on the desktop app, pulling from Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 or Slack through connectors, or using its built-in browser. Tasks can run in the cloud after you close the laptop, and you can schedule recurring ones.
A first Cowork task most teams can try this week
- 1Pick a weekly choreFor example: collect the week’s sales files from a shared folder and produce a one-page summary with variances.
- 2Describe the outcome and the format“A one-page Claude Doc, a table by branch, three bullet points on what changed, flag anything down more than 10%.”
- 3Point it at copies, keep permissions on ManualManual mode asks before each action. Stay there until you trust the task.
- 4Check the result, then schedule itOnce the output is right twice, make it a recurring task and review it instead of building it.
Two cautions. Agentic tasks use more of your plan’s usage than chat, so check Settings > Usage early. And Cowork’s built-in browser, added on 26 August, is deliberately separate from your own browser: it cannot see your tabs or saved passwords, and banking, email and sign-in sites are blocked by default.
For admins: what to switch on
On Team and Enterprise, owners turn Docs and Slides on or off under Organization settings > Artifacts and can limit them to certain groups. Docs and Slides are on by default for Pro, Max and Team, and off for Enterprise until an owner enables them. Cowork controls include web search, Claude in Chrome, and requiring approval before connector tools write or delete anything. On commercial plans, Anthropic states it does not train on your content by default. If staff are still on personal accounts, read our Claude plans guide first, and put a simple rule in place with our AI usage policy template.
Where this leaves Word, PowerPoint and Google Docs
They are not going anywhere, and the export options show Anthropic knows it. The realistic pattern for most Malaysian companies is: draft, review and iterate in Claude with colleagues, then export the final version into the system of record. The time saved is in the messy middle, not the final formatting. If your company is standardised on Microsoft 365, compare this with Microsoft Copilot, which works inside Word and PowerPoint directly.
Two days on the new Claude: Docs, Slides, Cowork tasks, skills and MCP connectors, built around your own files and workflows.
