The Security Operations Centre as we have known it for two decades is being rebuilt. Microsoft's April 2026 announcement on the agentic SOC, Elastic Security Labs' 2026 thesis, and IBM's Autonomous Threat Operations Machine (ATOM) all describe the same shift in different language: from copilot-only AI assistance to agents that autonomously prioritise alerts, execute closed-loop containment, and provide traceable reasoning for every decision.
Industry data suggests nearly two-thirds of organisations are already experimenting with AI agents in security, but fewer than one in four have deployed them in production. 2026 is the inflection point. This article is the practical view of where modern SOC operations sit today and what the next 12 months look like.
The traditional SOC and its limits
The classic SOC architecture — tier-1 analysts triaging alerts, tier-2 analysts investigating, tier-3 analysts hunting and engineering detections — has structural problems that AI did not create but does expose:
- Alert volume. Modern environments generate orders of magnitude more telemetry than human analysts can review. Most SOCs are quietly dropping or ignoring large fractions of their alert stream.
- Tier-1 burnout. The repetitive, low-judgement triage work that defines the tier-1 role is exactly the work that drives attrition.
- Slow incident timelines. By the time an alert is escalated through three tiers, contained, and closed, attackers in any reasonably fast attack chain have moved on.
- Coverage gaps. Without sufficient analyst capacity, full ATT&CK coverage and continuous threat hunting are aspirational, not real.
The agentic SOC pattern
Agentic SOC — 4 layers
The pattern emerging across major vendor implementations and arXiv research papers like the AgentSOC framework shares a common shape:
Layer 1 — autonomous triage. AI agents handle the first-pass analysis of every alert. They correlate with adjacent telemetry, classify by severity and likelihood, and either close obvious false positives or escalate genuine signals to humans with full context attached. Where a tier-1 analyst handled 40–80 alerts per shift, agents handle thousands.
Layer 2 — investigation co-pilot. For escalated alerts, AI agents draft the initial investigation — pulling logs, correlating across data sources, building a timeline, and proposing containment steps. Human analysts review, refine, and decide. This is where the copilot-era productivity gains have been most visible.
Layer 3 — autonomous containment. For specific high-confidence patterns, agents execute pre-approved containment actions automatically — blocking accounts, isolating hosts, revoking sessions — with the human reviewing the action after the fact rather than approving it before.
Layer 4 — continuous hunting. AI agents run hypothesis-driven hunts continuously across the telemetry, surfacing findings for human analysts to investigate. Dropzone AI Threat Hunter is one example, with 250+ hunt packs mapped to MITRE ATT&CK and federated hunts running in 60–90 minutes.
Where humans add value in the agentic SOC
The honest answer is that the analyst role is changing, not disappearing. The 2026 SOC analyst is less a triage worker and more a senior investigator, detection engineer, and AI agent supervisor.
The work that consistently requires human judgement:
- Final containment decisions in ambiguous cases — particularly those affecting customer-facing systems or executives.
- Hypothesis generation for threat hunting in novel territory not yet covered by hunt packs.
- Detection engineering — turning hunt findings into reliable continuous detections.
- Tuning and supervising agent behaviour. The agents need calibration; the humans do the calibration.
- Communication with the business — translating technical findings into decisions and actions.
The architecture decisions to make in 2026
Every security leader is facing the same set of choices. The decisions made in 2026 will define SOC capability for years.
Build vs buy vs partner. Building an agentic SOC capability internally is feasible only for the largest organisations. For most, the question is which vendor platform best matches the organisation's existing stack, and which functions to retain in-house.
How much autonomy to grant. Layer 1 (triage) is now mature; Layer 4 (continuous hunting) is mature. Layer 3 (autonomous containment) is the hardest decision — it requires high confidence in agent reasoning and clear pre-approval boundaries.
Tooling consolidation. Agentic SOC platforms work best with consolidated telemetry. Organisations with deep tooling sprawl (multiple SIEMs, multiple EDRs, fragmented identity logs) will need to consolidate before the agent layer can deliver full value.
Governance. Every agent action needs to be auditable, explainable, and reversible. The traceable reasoning requirement is non-negotiable for regulated sectors — particularly financial services under BNM RMiT.
The Malaysian context
For Malaysian financial institutions specifically, the November 2025 RMiT revision raises the bar for SOC capability — particularly around incident detection, response speed, and audit trail quality. Agentic SOC tooling, deployed with appropriate governance, can meaningfully improve all three. Deployed without governance, it can introduce new audit and accountability risks.
The right posture for a 2026 SOC modernisation programme: pilot agentic capabilities in tier-1 triage and continuous hunting where the risk is contained and the value is high; defer full Layer 3 autonomy until the governance scaffold is mature; invest heavily in detection engineering and analyst training in parallel with the agent rollout.
