The mechanical parts — querying, cleaning, modelling, charting — are getting easier and faster, to the point where some of them no longer require a human at all. The strategic parts — choosing what to measure, framing the right question, defending a recommendation against a sceptical executive — are demanding more, not less.

The result is a kind of Catch-22. The barrier to producing a competent-looking analysis has fallen sharply. The barrier to being trusted with a real decision has risen. Anyone calling themselves a data scientist in 2026 is now graded harder on the second axis, even as the first axis becomes commoditised around them.

What AI is actually deskilling

Specifically, here are the parts of the work AI is genuinely good at in 2026.

  • Writing routine SQL against a known schema. Faster and more accurate than most analysts on first draft.
  • Producing exploratory plots from a clean dataset.
  • Drafting executive summaries from a notebook.
  • Generating standard statistical analyses with appropriate caveats.
  • Filling in the missing parts of a deck a stakeholder has half-finished.

If your job in 2024 consisted mostly of these tasks, the bottom of the labour market for that work has fallen out from under you. Not because you have been replaced, but because the productive output of one analyst-with-AI is now what three analysts-without-AI used to deliver. Companies are noticing.

What AI is bad at, and where the new ceiling is

The same tools are not yet good at — and may not become good at any time soon — the parts of the work that have always been hardest.

This is the Catch-22. To get good at the high-end skills, you need exposure to real, consequential decisions. To get exposure to those decisions, you need to be trusted, which usually requires a track record of consistently producing competent analyses. 2. Pick a domain and go deep

A general data scientist competing on tooling alone will lose to AI-augmented competition. A data scientist who knows fintech regulations, retail unit economics, or healthcare claims data deeply has a moat the tools cannot fill. Domain depth is the durable edge.

3. Treat communication as a craft, not a chore

Writing well, presenting clearly, running a meeting that ends in a decision — these are now the differentiators they always should have been. AI does not replace them; AI makes their absence more obvious by accelerating everything else.

The honest version is that the data scientist label is fine, but the work it implies has shifted. The people who continue to call themselves data scientists in 2030 will be the ones who used the 2024–2027 period to compound judgement, domain depth, and communication — using AI to accelerate the production work, not to replace the thinking behind it. The ones who lean entirely on the tools without the underlying disciplines are doing something more like junior consultancy, with a quietly compressing salary trajectory.

The Catch-22 is real, and it is uncomfortable. But the work is more interesting than it has been in years, and the people who navigate it well will look back on this period as the one where the role finally got serious.
